Abstract

738,435. Dock gates. DRYSDALE & CO., Ltd., and YOUNG, J. Sept. 22, 1954 [June 22, 1953; July 27, 1953], Nos. 17174/53 and 20721/53. Class 68(2). A caisson type dock gate, for graving and like dry docks, houses all the dock de-watering and filling equipment. The dock gate 1 has a number of syphon pipes 2 for emptying the dock and syphon pipes 5 for filling the dock. Each pipe 2 has an axial flow pump 3 primed by an air exhausting pump 8 and a breathing valve 4 at the top of the invert, and to empty the dock, the valves 4 are closed and the pumps 3 operated to fill the syphon pipes 2. The jets of water leaving the syphon pipes 2 causes, additionally, the gate 1 to be pressed against the seats 10 in the dock wall and bottom in the early stages of the de-watering operation. The jets of water also assist in removing silt gathered at the entrance to the dock. Each pipe 5 has a branch 6 at the top of the invert connected to an air exhausting pump 7, which pumps 7 are operated to fill the pipes 5 for syphoning the water into the dock. To assist the filling, the pumps 3 may be reversed to flow water through the pipes 2 in the reverse direction and a booster pump may be provided to augment the filling effort during the final stages. Pumps 9 are provided for drainage, bilge and ballast duties.
