Abstract

738,326. Welding by fusion. ARONSON, C. N. March 23, 1953, No. 7983/53. Class 83(4). Apparatus for supporting cylindrical workpieces for welding &c. comprises a pair of aligned horizontally-spaced toothed wheels 13, 14 with an endless chain engaging them and means for adjusting the spacing of the wheels, whereby the upper portion of the chain, in contact with the work, forms an arc of variable radius. A cylinder 10 rests on two supports 11, 12 identical except that only the former has a drive for the toothed wheels. The chains have rubber pads 103 contacting the work. Wheel 14 is carries on a pair of connected beams 21, 22 and a shaft extending from the wheel is connected through a clutch to a worm 50 on a shaft which is connected through a splined connection to a worm in the casing of wheel 13. A motor drives the latter worm and the clutch and gearing for wheel 13 are the same as for wheel 14. A lever 42 actuated by a solenoid 77 acting through a chain 79 operates the clutch. The wheel 14 on the beams 21, 22 is movable along the base of the apparatus by a screw device 91. The motor, a three-phase reversible motor, and the clutch solenoids are controlled by a two position and off switch. In one position the solenoid for one clutch is actuated and the motor rotates in one direction. Thus, e.g. the wheel 13 is driven clockwise as seen in Fig. 1. In the other position the wheel 14 is driven counterclockwise. A further switch is provided so that both solenoids may be operated when the first switch is " off " to obtain a braking action or when the first switch is in either position when both wheels are driven.
