Abstract

The invention comprises epoxide compounds of the general formula <FORM:0738199/IV (b)/1> in which R is an aliphatic hydrocarbon group to two adjacent carbon atoms of which there is attached an oxygen atom and wherein at least one of the amino hydrogen atoms is deplaced by an acetate group, -CH2COOM, in which M is hydrogen, alkali metal, ammonium or substituted ammonium. They may be produced by carboxymethylating a di-hydroxy aliphatic mono-amine, having at least one displaceable amino hydrogen and in which the two hydroxyl groups are attached to two adjacent carbon atoms, by condensing formaldehyde with an alkali metal cyanide in a hot alkaline solution in the presence of the amine; the alkali metal salt of the hydroxy-aliphatic amino acid so obtained is suspended in xylene or toluene and heated to convert the hydroxy groups into an epoxy group. In the examples: (a) 2,3-dihydroxy propylamine is treated with sodium cyanide and formaldehyde in the presence of caustic soda; the anhydrous product is suspended in xylene and heated to give 2,3-epoxy-diacetic amino acid disodium salt of formula <FORM:0738199/IV (b)/2> (b) 3,4-dihydroxy butylamine is carboxymethylated by the process of (a) and the product is then suspended in xylene and heated to give <FORM:0738199/IV (b)/3> (c) 1-chloro-2-butene is heated with the disodium salt of imino diacetic acid in aqueous ethanol to give 1-amino-2-butene-N,N1-diacetic acid which is suspended in dioxane and treated with benzoyl peroxide to give <FORM:0738199/IV (b)/4>
