738,055. Stuffing-box and piston packing. BELDAM ASBESTOS CO., Ltd. June 2, 1954 [May 27, 1953], No. 14793/53. Classes 122 (1) and 122 (5). A spacer ring 11 for a U-type packing or sealing ring 4 used in a stuffing-box 1 or other fluid-type seal, e.g. a piston packing, is made by shaping a flexible material into the form of a rod 12 having helically extending channels or grooves, cutting off a suitable length of the rod and bending it to circular form to bring the ends into close proximity with each other. The rod 12 is preferably formed from rubber of square cross section but it may be formed by twisting together two or more strands of suitable material, for example, relatively soft wire. The ends of the ring 11 are preferably secured together to form a butt or scarfed joint by means of an adhesive.
