Abstract

Raw wool is scoured by washing it with a polyhydric alcohol or a keto alcohol, containing at least 4 and preferably not more than 6 carbon atoms. The polyhydric alcohols specified are hexylene glycols such as 2-methylpentan-2 : 4-diol. The keto-alcohol specified is diacetone alcohol. The alcohols may be wet or contain small amounts of detergents. The wool may be immersed in the alcohol for a suitable time, e.g. 1 to 2 hours, removed and squeezed and then re-immersed, preferably in fresh alcohol. An elevated temperature is preferred, e.g. 50-60 DEG C. The Provisional Specification refers to the use of cycloaliphatic alcohols, and mentions cyclohexanol.
