Abstract
In a method of applying, improving or removing protective coatings on metal or other conductive surfaces the surfaces are subjected immediately before, during or after the application of the coating to alternating magnetic fields of such frequency and energy density per unit area and time that the contact layer between the surface and the coating attains a temperature considerably higher than that of deeper layers of the surface. An induction heating coil is connected to a self-excited high-frequency generator arranged to maintain automatically the tuning as the inductance of the coil varies with the distance between the coil and the workpiece and the shape of the latter. The method may be used to fuse coatings onto the surface, the coatings being brushed, sprayed or blown on to the surface as a liquid or powder, or applied in solid form as a rod or stick to the heated surface. Emulsion, suspension or dispersion coatings may be dried and fused to the surface. Coatings may be applied as films, with or without additional fusible binding agents. Non-metallic surfaces can be treated when provided with suitable conductive coatings, and moist surfaces may be dried before coating. Fusible coatings may be stripped or removed after the surface has been heated.ALSO:In a method of removing fusible non-metallic coatings from metal surfaces the surfaces are subjected to alternating magnetic fields of such frequency and energy density per unit area and time that the contact layer between the surface and the coating attains a temperature considerably higher than that of deeper layers of the surface. An induction heating coil is connected to a self-excited high-frequency generator arranged to automatically maintain the tuning as the inductance of the coil varies with the distance between the coil and the workpiece and the shape of the latter. After heating the surface the coating is removed in the usual manner.
