Abstract

737,733 Motor vehicles. AUSTIN-WESTERN CO. Oct. 8, 1951, No. 23419/51. Classes 79 (2), 79(3), 79(4) and 79(5). [Also in Group X] The rear end of a motor vehicle frame 1 carries a stationary fifth wheel segment 14a rotatably carrying a segment 14 to which is secured an axle casing 9, tandem axle housings 7 being rotatably carried by the ends of the casing 9 and carrying tandem wheels 3, 4, the wheels 3, 4 being driven through drive mechanisms 13 in the housings 7 from axles 8 in the casing 9, the axles 8 being driven through reduction gearing 9b, 9c provided in a gear housing 9a in the casing 9 and through a universally jointed propeller shaft 22 from an engine 18 on the frame 1, and the wheels 3, 4 being steerably deflected by hydraulic mechanism 16 arranged between the segment 14 and the frame 1. In the preferred embodiment the frame 1 additionally carries changespeed gear, transfer gear box 20, an operator's station 72 and road grading implements (see Group X). The front end of the frame is carried on an axle housing 35 pivoted to the frame. The front wheels 2 are driven from the gear box 20 through a shaft 21 and are steered through a rod 25 actuated by a hydraulic cylinder 23 from a valve (not shown) which controls flow of pressurized liquid from a reservoir (not shown) supplied from an engine driven pump (not shown) the reservoir also supplying through a valve (not shown) the mechanism 16. The hydraulic valves for the front and rear wheels may be replaced by a single control valve which effects interrelated steering deflections of front and rear wheels.
