758,938. Endless-track vehicles. DENNISON, E. A. Nov. 30, 1954 [Nov. 30, 1953; Nov. 9, 1954], Nos. 33157/53 and 32356/54. Classes 79 (1) and 79 (2). A pneumatic tyred tractor whose front steering-wheels swivel on pivots at the ends of an axle beam controlled by an operator through steering-gear, is converted to an endless track vehicle by the provision of two overall chains, each passing round the wheels on one side of the vehicle, the front wheels being aligned and fixed to prevent swivelling and two radius rods being fixed between the rear axle casing and the front axle beam, steering being provided by differential braking or driving. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the invention is applied to a tractor having rear driving wheels 17 and front wheels 15. The wheels 15 are carried on an axle beam 12 pivoted at 13 to the tractor frame. Secured to the ends of the axle beam 12 are brackets 22 carrying stub axles 20. Universally jointed at 24 to each bracket 22 is a radius rod 23 pivoted at 25 to the rear axle casing 11. Associated with each pair of wheels 15, 17 is an overall chain of the form described in Specifications 465,639 and 589,200. Associated with each driving-wheel 17 is a brake drum 18 having a brake band 19, the bands 19 being operated through cables 32 from the steering wheel 16 to effect steering of the vehicle. In another embodiment, Figs. 5 and 6, an engine-driven shaft 50 is bevel-gear connected with half shafts 40 carrying male clutch members 57 for engagement with female clutch members 56 rotatably mounted on the shaft 40 and carrying bevel-gears 54 meshing with gears 55 on wheel-carrying shafts. Associated with each clutch member 56 is a brake band 64, the bands 64 being independently operable by pedals 65 and a third pedal 66 being provided to operate the main clutch of the tractor. The clutch members 57 are controlled through levers 63, a rod 70, a three-armed lever 71 and rods from the vehicle steering wheel (not shown).
