737,650. Vapour burners. BACKUS, C. M. Dec. 17, 1953 [Oct. 9, 1953], No. 35145/53. Class 75 (1). [Also in Group XIII] A heater for heating the coolant and lubricating fluids of a vehicle engine and air for the passenger compartment of the vehicle comprises a preferably cylindrical mixing and vaporizing chamber 11 having a fuel inlet means 13 and air inlet means 12 at one end and a mixture outlet 14 at the other end, a number of spaced perforated baffles 32 ... 36 traversing the mixing and vaporizing chamber, and a cylindrical combustion chamber 18 encompassing the mixing and vaporizing chamber and having an inlet 17 communicating with the mixture outlet 14 thereof. The air inlet means comprises apertures 31 in a member 37 closing one end of the mixing and vaporizing chamber and carrying the fuel inlet means 13. The mixture is ignited by a glow plug 19 at the inlet 17 of the combustion chamber 18 and the products of combustion escape through a conduit 21 at the outlet end of the combustion chamber. The baffles 32 ... 36 are in the form of discs which are axially spaced with the spacings alternately large and small as shown ; the perforations in the baffles are disposed in radial rows. The combustion chamber is surrounded by two concentric annular chambers 24, 25, the inner 24 being divided into two semi-annular chambers with separate inlets and outlets for the coolant and lubricating fluids of the vehicle engine, the outer 25 having an outlet and an inlet for air for the passenger compartment.
