In the formation of a continuous tubbing for a shaft, prefabricated tubbing elements, having a steel sheet extending over the entire element or a weldable rim of steel, are lowered into the shaft and, when correctly positioned therein, welded to adjacent, previously-positioned elements. A preferred form of tubbing element consists of a cylindrical, or part-cylindrical, steel sheet wholly or partly lined with cast iron parts, the sheet projecting beyond the lining to form a, weldable rim. Specification 664,136 is referred to.
