Abstract

737,521. Supplying liquid fuel to gas turbines. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. July 9, 1954 [July 15, 1953], No. 19630/53. Class 110 (3). [Also in Groups XI and XXIX] In a liquid fuel supply system to the combustion chamber of a gas turbine plant the liquid fuel is heated in a steam jacket 4 or by an electric resistance and a small quantity of the heated fuel is branched off from the main flow to the burner 5 through a constant flow valve 7 insensitive to viscosity and then through a restriction in the form of a long coil 8 of small bore tubing back to the supply tank 1, the pressure before the restriction acting on a spring-biased piston 11 in a cylinder 9 to control the heating of the fuel in the sense of increasing the heating as the pressure increases. The piston 11 operates either, as shown, a valve 12 controlling the steam supply to the jacket 4 or a rheostat controlling the electrical heater for the fuel. The constant flow valve 7 comprises a chamber divided by a membrane 18 into inlet and outlet compartments which communicate through a conduit containing a sharp-edged orifice 19. Fuel from the heater is fed to the inlet compartment by a tube 13 having an obturator 20 which is attached to the membrane 18, whereby any increase in pressure in the inlet compartment deflects the membrane to close the tube 13. The membrane is biased by an adjustable spring 21 towards the open position of the obturator. The fuel is pumped from the tank by a pump 2 and passes to the burner through a throttle valve 14. In a modification the burner is a spill type and the burner output is controlled by a needle valve in the spill line and a pressure relief valve is shunted across the pump.
