Abstract

737,312. Drilling-machines. WINDER, R. H. B., and NATIONAL COAL BOARD. June 3, 1952 [June 8, 1951], No. 13629/51. Class 83 (3). A drilling-machine for earth &c. comprises a casing 12, a drill tube 10 for holding a bit 31 and extending throughout the length of the casing, means 1, 6, 7 for imparting unidirectional rotary motion to the drill tube, and means 9, 11 whereby the drill tube can be caused to move axially relatively to the casing simultaneously with the rotary motion. A piston 1, carrying rack teeth meshing with a pinion sleeve 6, is reciprocated by fluid pressure and, in one direction of movement, causes the spring 7 to be twisted to grip the tube 10. The sleeve 6 carries a peripheral cam 11 engaging followers 9 on a manually rotatable sleeve 8. By adjustment of the sleeve, the rod 10 can be caused to advance, to be retracted, or to remain axially stationary for each rotational movement of the drill. The retraction movement is caused by the return spring 16. The machine may be fixed in a hole by a head 24 clamped against the walls of the hole by a hydraulically-actuated sleeve 19. A stream of fluid, which may be from the same source as that reciprocating the piston 1 and clamping head 14, is passed between the rod 10 and the sleeve 19, the fluid and detritus returning through the tube.
