Abstract
A film produced from a coating composition comprising a lacquer solvent and an organic solvent-soluble aminoplastic resin together with an organic solvent-soluble pest-controlling substance (i.e. pest attractant, pest repellant or pesticide), in a quantity sufficient to exhibit the effect of crystallization, exudation or evaporation on or from the film surface, is hardened by subjecting the surface of the film to irradiation with ultra-violet light for a time sufficient to reduce the rate of, but not inhibit, the release of the pest - controlling substance. An acid accelerator, e.g. sulphuric, hydrochloric, ethyl sulphuric or phosphoric acid, or heat may be used in producing the film. If desired, the film may be subjected to additional heat treatment by infra-red radiation or by hot air. The resins used may be made by condensing urea and/or melamine with formaldehyde in the presence of alcohols, e.g. butanol, and may be plastcized with castor oil, tricresyl phosphate or alkyds of short or medium oil length. Esters, hydrocarbons, ketones, ethers and alcohols may be used as solvents. Fillers, pigments and dye-stuffs may be added. A long list of pest-controlling substances is given. In examples, the composition consists of a xylenol-butanol solution of a urea-formaldehyde resin plasticized with a castor oil-modified alkyd, sulphuric acid and (1) gamma benzene hexachloride, and (2) a mixture of pyrethrum and piperonyl butoxide. The compositions may be applied to surfaces such as the cabin of an aeroplane and furniture. Specifications 344,401 and 709,721 are referred to.
