Abstract

736,917. Filters. FRAM CORPORATION. June 16, 1953, No. 16573/53. Class 46. A filter element comprising a plurality of shaped porous fibrous paper members secured together is formed by bonding one member, having a thermoplastic and a thermosetting resin uniformly distributed throughout its fibres by impregnation with an aqueous dispersion or preferably solution of the resin, to another similar member by pressure with or without heat, and further bonding the members by heat-setting the resin. In Fig. 3 the outer peripheries of two'sheets 10 and 11 are sealed by a pressure of 1000 lb. p.s.i., leaving a slight groove at 13 and rib at 12. The sheets are held apart at their centre by a spacer 15 having staggered filtrate-discharge grooves 18, 19 and formed of resin or the like. A number of such units is sealed together, with or without the interposition of washers 22 of the same material as the cells, to form the element shown in Fig. 1. In Fig. 10 discs 42, Fig. 12, are assembled in staggered formation, three such discs forming a unit, and caused to adhere between flanged endplates 48, 49, by the application of a pressure of 100 lb. p.s.i. at a temperature of from 100 to 350‹ F. After the element is finished in each case, sufficient heat is applied to cause polymerization of the resin into its set form. The making of an axially-pleated cylindrical element with annular end-plates of the same material is described. U.S.A. Specification 1,966,458 is referred to.
