A compact structure comprises a number of fibrous particles 4 coated with a bonding agent 2 that at least partially fills the spaces between the particles. The fibres in each particle are meshed together to form a network in which the fibres are relatively movable and are relatively orientated, to ensure that the properties of the particles are isotropic. The particles 4 are also flattened under pressure to give them lenticular shape so that the resultant structure is laminated. The bonding agent can be flexible and may be applied. as a paste. The fibres of the particles can be natural or synthetic. The particles prior to pressing can be spherical. cylindrical or in the form of lozenges or plates and may be of a uniform or differing size. The particles can contain bonding agents, fillers or colouring agents. A coating 3 can be formed by applying a paste to the network prior to pressing, see Fig. 1, not shown.
