Abstract

1,083,427. Edge filters for liquids; extrusion presses. LARGE INDUSTRI. July 20, 1965 No. 30850/65. Heading BID. A filter, e.g. for thermoplastic material, comprises a plurality of impervious elements disposed in a housing which may be heated and through which the material may be passed under pressure, each element consisting of a flat ring having a central aperture surrounded by a plurality of smaller apertures and also having a portion of one face recessed around the central aperture, the perimeter of the recessed portion intersecting the perimeters of the smaller apertures; the elements are stacked in the housing in one or more groups, the elements in each group being in contact, with their recessed faces facing in the same direction. As shown, material introduced at 2 is forced through passages in a guiding element 5' and then through aligned apertures 6 in a first stack of rings 3, the recessed faces of which face downwards. Material passing from the apertures 6, radially inwards along the recessed portions of the rings, to the central apertures 8, is discharged at the end of the apparatus, while that unable to do so is forced through smaller aligned apertures in a second stack of rings 4. Material passing between these rings joins that being discharged at the end. When a valve 12 is opened, rejected material collecting in a channel 13 may be discharged. Preferably housing 1 is heated by a coil 15. The large areas of rings in contact with the material ensure good heat transmission to it.
