Abstract

736,888. Electrodialysis apparatus. NEDERLANDSE CENTRALE ORGANISATIE VOOR TOEGEPAST - NATUURWETENSCHAPPELIJK ONDERZOEK. March 11, 1953 [March 13, 1952], No. 6731/53. Class 41. In electrodialysing apparatus subdivided by membranes not constant in shape to form two electrode compartments separated by a dialysis compartment, or a series of dialysis compartments each separated by intermediate rinsing compartments, and having devices for rinsmg the electrode compartments and any rinsing compartments and for passing liquid through the dialysis compartment or compartments, the electrode compartments and any rinsing compartments present, and, if required, the dialysis compartment or compartments, are provided with supporting devices to maintain the right distance between an electrode and the adjacent membrane or two adjacent membranes consisting of screens of insulating material having perforations and which support the membranes at points of contact distributed over the whole surface and not forming uninterrupted lines in the direction of liquid flow. The supporting devices, which may be of polyvinyl chloride, may be corrugated screens 1 having perforations 2 (Fig. 1). In an electrode compartment a screen (e.g. 17 between an electrode 15 and membrane 19, Fig. 6) is placed with the corrugations parallel to the direction of liquid flow, or two screens may be used separated by a flat gauze of insulating material. In a compartment formed by two membranes, the screen is placed with the corrugations not parallel with the direction of liquid flow, e.g. in Fig. 6 screens between membranes 19 to 24 have their corrugations at angles of 60 degrees and 120 degrees to the direction of liquid flow. In a modification, the screens have globular raised portions on the faces to contact the membranes.
