Abstract

769,307. Electrodialysis. PERMUTIT CO., Ltd. Aug. 30, 1954 [Sept. 7, 1953], No. 24740/53. Class 41. An electrodialytic cell comprises a plurality of compartments separated by alternate anion- and cation - exchange membranes held apart by spacers 2 having holes 3, 4 near one edge 5, and one or more ribs 6 which define channels 7 to direct liquid from one hole 3 to the other hole 4 in a path which lies near the opposite edge. Each spacer 2 may be an integral peripheral projection 2 on the membrane, with which the ribs 6 are likewise integral, ribs 6 and projection 2 having an insulating coating, or the spacer may be a separate insulating frame, the ribs 6 being integral therewith, the membranes having holes registering with those in the spacers. Each spacer has one or two additional holes 10, 11 which form by-pass holes for the other liquid, alternate spacers being inverted so that the two liquids flow alternately through the compartments. One additional hole 10 or 11 only is necessary if each liquid is to flow in series through the appropriate compartments, half the spacers 2 having it in one corner, half in the other. If each liquid is to flow in parallel, two additional holes 10, 11 are necessary, one in each corner. The ribs may be arranged to provide a plurality of alternative serpentine paths between the holes 3, 4. Specification 758,650 is referred to.
