Abstract

<PICT:0736747/IV (c)/1> A web 3 such as paper or fabric is treated with a vapour or liquid while supported on a moving resilient bed such as a resilient covering 5 on a roller 4, or a rubber belt, the vapour or liquid being supplied under pressure to a pressure-resisting trough T having a mouthpiece sealed by the web. The quantity of the deposit is controlled by a springy lip 1 of the mouthpiece p trailing in lightly stressed contact with the web. A similar springy lip 2 may seal the entrance edge of the mouthpiece. The lips 1 and 2, which may be of metal or alloy such as steel, are clamped to rigid stocks 11 and 21 forming walls of the trough by plates 12 and 22, and the ends of the trough are closed, e.g. by dykes. Angular, flow-diverting elements 141 may be provided to seal the corners formed by adjacent surfaces of stock 11 and the dykes. The roller, roller covering, belt, trough, mouthpiece, or springy lips may be heated.
