Abstract

736,726. Creasing-apparatus. BROTHERTON, C. N. July 20, 1954 [May 12, 1953], No. 13226/53. Class 100 (2). In a carton-blank making press creasing blades 8, Fig. 6, for forming fold lines co-operate with backing strips 12 which are channelled to receive the deflected portions 14a of the blank 14 and, according to the invention, parts of the backing strips are cut out to provide the channel C by an element 2 adapted to fit over the blade to convert it into a cutting-tool. By this means accurate positioning of the channel with respect to the blade is ensured. As shown in Fig. 2 the element 2 comprises side members 3 forming between them a lower slot 7 fitting over the blade 8 and upper slot 4 separating the cutting edges 5 which are formed by bevelling the marginal portions of the side members 3. The backing strip 12 is stuck to the impression member 11 of the press and all the creasing blades are provided with conversion elements 2. The height of the cutting edges 5 is such that when the press is then operated the backing strips are cut as shown in Fig. 4 but cutting blades 10, mounted on the same base 9 as the creasing blades, do not contact the impression member 11. After this operation the conversion elements are removed and the press is ready for use, the creased part of the blank 14, Fig. 6, being deflected into the channel C formed between the remaining parts of the backing strip 12 as shown. The invention may be applied to flat-bed or cylinder presses.
