Abstract
736,253. Cleaning metal surfaces. OSBORN MANUFACTURING CO. Feb. 22, 1952, No. 14794/53. Divided out of 736,217. Class 82 (2). [Also in Groups XXII and XXIII] In a method of removing scale from or cleaning a metal surface, the surface is flexed convexly, the convex surface brushed and a hard granular abrasive carried by a fluid medium or a liquid surface-beneficiating material forcibly projected against the brushed portion of the surface. As shown, metal strip S is flexed by passing it successively over two rolls 1 and 2 in combination with rollers 6-12 and 20-26, and rotary brushes 3 and 4 with axes parallel to those of the rolls 1 and 2 either rotate continuously in one direction or are periodically reversed. Scale removed from the sheet is carried by a fan 14 after screening to a hopper 18 for supply to the shaft of the brush 3, from which it passes by radial openings to the brush, a similar arrangement being provided for the brush 4. The use of brushes as described in Specification 657,749, [Group XXIII], with passages for fluids or abrasive, mounted in a fixed shaft with asymmetrically disposed radial openings to give a directed flow of fluid and a fixed wiper between the openings and the passages to keep the latter clear, is described. Rollers 27, 28 and 29 straighten the strip after treatment. In an alternative arrangement spring-loaded rollers replace the rollers 6-12 and 20-26.
