[Class 82 (ii).] In a machine for branning tinplates or for dusting and polishing tinplates and the like after branning, two or more co-operating pairs of cleaning rolls are provided, each of which is arranged at an angle other than a right-angle to the direction of movement of the plates through the machine and which preferably rotate in a direction opposite to the direction of travel of the plates. In a dusting and polishing machine three pairs 14, 17, 6 of sheepskin covered cleaning rolls are provided, the pairs 14, 17 rotating in a direction opposite to the direction of travel of the plates and being journalled on shafts 12, 15 respectively, disposed at an angle of approximately 45‹ to the side frames 1, 2 of the machine. The rolls 17 are longer than the rolls 14 and overlap them at the inner end. The plates travel in the direction shown by the arrow A and are passed by rubber-covered conveying rolls 25, 26, 18, 21 through the cleaning rolls 14, 17 to another pair of conveying rolls 10, disposed within the angle formed by the cleaning rolls 14, 17, which directs them past a sponge rubber wiper 9 to parallel spaced guide-bars 8 which lead to the third pair of cleaning rolls 6 which are disposed at right-angles to the framework and rotate in the direction of travel of the plates. The plates are discharged from the machine by rubber-covered conveying rolls 4, 5. The rolls 6 rotate at a greater speed than the conveying rolls and the rolls 14, 17 at approximately the same speed as the conveying rolls. The invention is also applicable to machines for scrubbing or scouring black plate or strip metal in which angularly disposed brush rollers or cotton disc rollers are used, preferably in conjunction with a water spray.
