Abstract
809,160. Cleaning metal strip. OSBORN MANUFACTURING CO. Jan. 24, 1956 [March 3, 1955], No. 2355/56. Class 99(2). [Also in Group XXIII] Brushing apparatus particularly adapted for cleaning hot rolled metal strip comprises, as shown in Fig. 1, cylindrical rotary brushes 42 and 43 between which the strip passes, driven by motors 23, 24 through belt drives between pulleys such as 29 on the motor shafts and pulleys such as 51 on the brush shafts, the brush units being mounted on a carriage 3 reciprocable at right angles to the direction of strip travel along tracks 2 by a fixed hydraulic cylinder the piston rod 71 of which is attached to the carriage and the fluid supply to which is reversed at the ends of the carriage traverse by dogs adjustable in position to adjust the amplitude of reciprocation of the brushes so that the brush edges may in turn approach closely the corresponding side edges of the strip, thus evening the wear. Instead of hydraulic reciprocation, electric limit switches L operated by the carriage at the ends of its travel may reverse the direction of an electric motor moving the carriage. The brushing unit may be swung about a pivot 39 so that it can be set to brush at any desired angle to the direction of strip travel, and the position of the brushes 42, 43 may be adjusted, the lower by motor 55 and gear units 58 and 59 driving vertical screws moving in lower frame 46, a clutch 60 enabling angular adjustment in a vertical plane, and the upper similarly by motor 63 and gear units 66 and 67, a clutch 68 also being provided. Fig. 9 shows diagrammatically a metal-strip-treating line, strip S passing from uncoiler 111 successively through pinch and feeder rolls 112, 113, preliminary brush unit 115, scale breaker 116, second brush unit 117, second scale breaker 118, third brush unit 119, pinch and leveller rolls 120, and 121, fourth brush unit 123, pinch unit 124 and slitter 125, the slitter dividing the strip into widths suitable for subsequent rolling operations. If desired a further brushing unit may be disposed after the slitter to smooth the edges formed thereby. When a number of brush units are used, they are preferably arranged at different angles to the direction of travel of the strip ; suitable speeds of rotation of the brushes may be up to 6,000 or 9,000 surface feet per minute, and 3 complete reciprocations per minute of the brush carriage is stated to be suitable. The direction of rotation of the brushes may be reversed periodically, and the brushes may be kept truly cylindrical by abrading members acting on the outermost parts not subjected to continuous brushing action. The rotary brushes may be of the type described in Specification 736,253 [Group XXIII], which is adapted to deliver fluid or abrasive to the brushed surface.
