Abstract

Iron or steel production comprises grinding ores to a grain size below 7 mm., reducing the Fe2O3 to Fe3O4 and FeO at below 520 DEG C., reoxidizing to g -Fe2O3 at temperatures decreasing from 440 DEG C. to 270 DEG C. in the presence of finely-dispersed water or water vapour for cooling, further cooling to below 100 DEG C., grinding to a fine powder, magnetic separation of gangue, and a final reduction at temperatures up to 900 DEG C. For obtaining iron dust, revolving tube furnaces or whirling layer furnaces as disclosed in Specifications 301,975 and 309,253, [both in Class 55 (i)], are suitably used, the initial reduction to F2O being effected with CO with gradual increase in temperature. Pyrites, and iron phosphate or carbonate ores for treatment must first be converted to ferric oxide below 620 DEG C., the phosphates being heated with dolomite, especially in the presence of alkalis.ALSO:Iron or steel production comprises grinding ores to a grain size below 7 mm., reducing the Fe2O3 to Fe3O4 and FeO at below 520 DEG C., re-oxidizing to g -Fe2O3 at temperatures decreasing from 440 DEG to 270 DEG C. in the presence of finely dispersed water or water vapour for cooling, further cooling to below 100 DEG C., grinding to a fine powder, magnetic separation of gangue, and a final reduction at temperatures up to 900 DEG C. Smelting of the iron dust, or a direct conversion to steel, may be effected in a cupola or low shaft furnace, if desired after mixing with scrap steel. Pyrites, and iron phosphate or carbonate ores for treatment must first be converted to ferric oxide below 620 DEG C., the phosphates being heated with dolomite, especially in the presence of alkalis.
