Abstract
735,989. Magnetic compositions and structures. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO., Inc. Sept. 29, 1953 [Oct. 2, 1952], No. 26718/53. Class 38 (2). The magnetic properties of a ferrite core are changed by the continued application of stress, e.g. application of radial compressive stress on an annular core of Ni Zn ferrite increases the maximum permeability and retentivity so that the hysteresis loop becomes more nearly rectangular. The cores are particularly suitable for magnetic memory devices and magnetic amplifiers. The stress may be that developed in core 11 by the shrinking as it sets of the body 13, e.g. of styrene-polyester casting resin, in which it is embedded. The core may carry winding 12 or there may be a hole in the central plastic part through which the winding passes. The stress may be increased by passing a current through the winding during setting of the plastic whereby the core dimensions are altered by the propery of magnetostriction. Variable stress for testing its effects may be applied by controllable oil pressure in a rubber tube 25 encircling the core 21 and held in place in a bass casing 22 by a brass plug 23. The properties of stressed cores of Ni Zn ferrites of different compositions are tabulated and contrasted with those of Mn Zn ferrite. In general ferrites with negative magnetostriction should be compressed and those with positive magnetostriction placed in tension.
