Abstract
735,972. Adhesive surgical dressings. JOHNSON & JOHNSON. July 24, 1953 [July 29, 1952], No. 20649/53. Class 81 (2). A method of making adhesive bandages having a backing of readily stretchable sheet material comprises supporting a web of such sheet material on a substantially unstretchable carrier sheet, the opposite surface of the web being covered with an adhesive coating, placing dressing material on a portion of this surface, placing a substantially unstretchable facing material on the adhesive surface and pressing it into the surface, removing the carrier sheet and cutting the sheet material and facing material to form individual adhesive bandages. Laminate material 5 of a width equal to the length of a completed bandage and consisting of a carrier sheet 11 of paper, such as urea-formaldehyde coated supercalendered kraft, adhering lightly to a sheet of dimensionally unstable material 12 such as a vinyl type plastic, e.g. polyvinyl chloride, and a layer 15 of adhesive, e.g. a rubber base adhesive, covered by a liner paper 16 treated with a silicone polymer is fed from a roll 10 to a guide roll 17 where the liner paper 16 is stripped from it. The laminate then passes to a punching device 21, 22 where vent holes (not shown) are made in the laminate 5 in the region to be occupied by a gauze pad 27. The laminate 5 then passes over a roll 26 and meets a supporting table 28 where pads 27 cut from a continuous strip 30 of gauze are placed transversely on the laminate 5. Two continuous overlapping strips of crinoline 36 are then added to the laminate 5, these strips being pressed into the exposed portions of the adhesive 15 on the laminate 5 by pull rolls 37, 40, the upper pull roll 37 having a recessed centre portion for accommodating the pad 27. The laminate 5 passes round the lower pull roll 40 where the carrier sheet 11 is removed and wound on a roll 41. After passing over a further roll 42, the laminate passes between metering rolls 45, 46 which feed it at a uniform rate to a cutting unit 47 which severs it transversely into individual adhesive bandages. In a modification (not shown) the gauze pads are fed on to the laminate in the direction of travel of the laminate and crinoline is provided from a simple sheet cut into portions which are applied to the laminate so that they overlap at the centre of each gauze pad, the laminate finally being cut into individual bandages having the same width as the laminate. In a further modification (not shown) a laminate consisting of a dimensionally unstable web having a pressure-sensitive adhesive surface is laid on a perforated conveyer belt the laminate being maintained in a dimensionally stable condition by suction produced by a vacuum box over which the conveyer belt passes while the gauze pads and crinoline are applied. The laminate is removed from the conveyer belt by a stripper roll before being cut into individual bandages.
