Abstract

1398011 Surgical dressings BTR INDUSTRIES Ltd 26 July 1973 [6 June 1972] 26376/72 Heading A5R [Also in Divisions B5 and C3] A surgical dressing comprises a backing strip 10 having on one side an adhesive facing 11 and an absorbent pad 12 adhered thereto, there being a film 13 of elastomeric material of a synthetic or natural rubber overlying the pad, the film being perforated to allow exudate from a wound to be absorbed by the pad. The thickness of the film may be between 0.0005 and 0.010 inches thick, and the edges may extend beyond the absorbent pad and adhere to the adhesive facing. The film may be of guttapercha, polychloropropene, polyisoprene, or compounded of these materials with other elastomers or fillers, or may be of natural or synthetic rubber compounded with plastics polymers or polyethylene, or polyethylene compounded with polyisobutylene. The film may include additives, for example bacteriocides or bacteriostats such as hexachlorophene sulpha mirazine, sulphonamide, penicillin or tetracyclines. The perforations in the film are substantially 0.5 mm diameter, and there are substantially 100 perforations to the square centimetre. The backing strip is of plastics material preferably with ventilation pores or of a woven fabric and the adhesive facing 11 is a rubber-based pressure-sensitive adhesion material applied to the strip 10 as a network of adhesion bands. Protective leaves 14 15 temporarily cover the adhesive.
