Abstract

776,408. Surgical dressings. LAUN, H., and LAUN, G. May 26, 1955 [May 26, 1954], No. 15172/55. Class 81(2) A surgical dressing comprises a foil 1 of perforated metal, preferably aluminium, secured on an absorbent fibrous layer 3. The perforations may be punched out holes but preferably they are made with a pointed punch which does not perforate the fibrous layer, so that the metal is bent down, as at 12 to form each hole in the shape of a truncated cone. The foil is preferably attached by means of an adhesive layer and the finished dressing may be mounted on an adhesive backing for application to a wound. The arrangement of mechanism for preparing the dressing is shown in Fig. 7. Metal foil 1 from a roll 27 is coated, by roller 32, with adhesive from a trough 31 and is pressed at roller 33, into engagement with a web 3 of absorbent fabric. The perforating head 14, carrying punches 15, is lowered on to the combined web by a crank disc 43 and, during this operation, gripping members 36, 37 arrest the movement of the web and feed roller 38 is raised out of engagement with it. This roller,is then lowered and the web is fed forward to a guillotine 40. The web may be passed through longitudinal slitting rollers 26.
