735,848. Optical systems. ABBEY, A. (American Optical Co.). Dec. 10, 1953, No. 34480/53. Class 97 (1). An optical projection system comprises a concave spherical mirror forming an image of an object and a correcting plate in the projecting beam in the form of a meniscus convex to the mirror and having one surface aspherical and the other curved spherically about a centre located approximately at the intersection of the image plane with the optical axis of the system, the plate correcting the spherical aberration of the system and also correcting field errors. Fig. 5 illustrates the system applied to a television receiver comprising a cathode ray tube 16 the image on the screen 11 of which is projected by a spherical mirror 10 on to a plane P through the corrector plate 13 having its surface 15 aspherical and its surface 14 curved spherically about the point 12 as centre. Alternatively the surface 15 may be spherical and the surface 14 aspherical. The plate 13 may be located at the centre of curvature of the mirror 10. Numerical data are given for two examples.
