735,793. Batteries. SOC. DES ACCUMULATEURS FIXES ET DE TRACTION. April 13, 1953 [May 5, 1952], No. 10060/53. Addition to 704,461. Class 53. A negative electrode for an alkaline accumulator consists of a mixture of finely divided copper and pulverulent iron or iron oxide compressed in the cold state, the iron or its oxide' being obtained by the reduction of ferric oxide and having a density between 0.5 and 1. The ferric oxide may be produced by roasting an iron salt for example the sulphate, oxalate, formate, carbonate, nitrate or chloride. Finely divided iron having the required density can be obtained by dissolving iron in sulphuric acid, roasting at a low temperature the sulphate so formed to convert it into ferric oxide and reducing this by hydrogen at a low temperature to prevent crystallization and sintering of the ron. Other methods of producing ferric oxide may be used for example by heating a mixture of ferrous sulphate and sodium carbonate. Instead of iron, finely-divided magnetite may be used which may be prepared by reducing ferric oxide obtained by heating an iron salt.
