In a shell moulding process, a frame is attached around and at or near the edges of the working face of the pattern plate so as to stand up therefrom, and after the frame has been disconnected from the pattern-plate the frame and the half-mould thereon are stripped from the pattern plate and pattern by applying a force tending to separate the frame from the pattern plate by means acting otherwise than through holes in the pattern plate. The frame, or lugs or projections thereon, may project beyond the edge of the pattern plate. The frame and mould are stripped from the pattern by exerting force on 'the projecting portions, e.g. by an ejector mechanism moving perpendicularly to the plane of the frame, while the pattern plate is held, or the projecting portions may be rested on a support, e.g. a number of spaced vertical posts, while the pattern and plate are caused to drop away by giving the mould a tap or by lifting the support carrying the assembly and dropping it on a solid surface. Alternatively wedges may be inserted between the frame and pattern plate. In a further modification the pattern plate is made of magnetic material and pulled away by magnetic means. Alternatively the pattern plate may project beyond the frame and the forces be applied to the projecting parts of the pattern plate. The cross-section of the frame members may be concave on the inside as described in Specification 716,251, which is referred to, or such as to enable the mould to be removed from the frame after moulding. The frame may be of aluminium or aluminium alloy with a base of stiffer material such as sheet steel, and the pattern plate may be of cast iron or aluminium. Half-patterns may be mounted on each side of the pattern plate and removable legs may be fitted to the plate so that they may be changed from one side to the other to keep the half-pattern mounted on the underside clear of the bench when that side is not in use.
