Abstract

725,455. Moulding processes; moulding- machines. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. March 31, 1953 [April 5, 1952], No. 8897/53. Class 83 (1). In a shell-moulding process, a sand-resin mix is brought into contact with a heated pattern or core-box by applying fluid pressure to one side of a flexible diaphragm, the other side of which is in conatct with the mix. The pattern or core-box may be vibrated during the application of the mix. Apparatus comprises a box 20 on a base plate 16, supporting on its upper flange 21 a diaphragm 36 of rubber or rubberlike material clamped by angle irons 24 which are welded to inclined plates 26. The heated pattern plate 50 is supported on angles 28 welded to the plates 26 and clamped by wedges 59 co-operating with cross members 54 and angles 56. The angles 28 form, with the plates 26, a passage 30 for a cooling medium such as water to prevent sticking of the mix to parts adjacent the upper portion of the plates 26. Pressure fluid is introduced beneath the diaphragm through conduits 42 at pressures from 1-100 lb. per square inch.
