Abstract

720,874. Moulds. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. April 7, 1953 [April 12, 1952], No. 9314/63. Class 83 (1). A shell mould is supported during pouring by support-plates having spaced projections which contact the opposite exterior faces of the mould. Mould-supporting plates 60, 78 are carried on a fixed bolster 12 and a bolster 20 reciprocable on a base 10 respectively. Each support-plate comprises a flange 62 and transversely extending ridges 68 which engage the mould surface, the plate 60 having dowels 66 which engage holes in the plate 78 in the mould-engaging position. Openings 70 in the upper portion of the flange 62 and ducts 72 permit the escape of gases formed during the metal-pouring operation, and a hood 102 exhausts the gases from the vicinity of the machine. Spring-loaded clamps 82 and a horizontal bar 92 on the plate 60 support the mould 63 until the plate 78 is moved into engagement therewith by an airoperated piston 28. The movable supportplate may be operated by hydraulic liquid or other means and one mould half may be mounted on each support-plate before closure.
