Abstract

735,640. Fluid-actuated valves. NORMALAIR, Ltd. March 5, 1953 [March 24, 1952], No. 7545/52. Class 135. [Also in Group XIII] An automatic valve for controlling the flow of compressed air to the turbine-expander unit of a cold-air refrigerating apparatus and actuated by the pressure difference across the valve, comprises a casing p having apertured ends and including a fixed circular orifice g through which passes a rod i slidably supporting a plunger h tapered as shown, the plunger being urged to the right as shown against the air stream by a spring j and to the left by the air pressure to increasingly obturate the orifice g at increasing pressure differences across the valve. Numerical data of the spring strength, the orifice size, the air pressure and rate of flow and the plunger shape are given. The arrangement is such that the plunger does not move until a pressure difference of six pounds per square inch exists. The regulation can be varied by altering the tension of spring j by screwing an end collar k along threads n or by shifting the initial position of the plunger h by means of a threaded abutment member o. Alternatively the orifice may be adjusted relatively to the plunger.
