A lid for a container to which milk or other liquid is drawn by a vacuum comprises a connection 22 for applying the vacuum and two heat-exchanging passages 24 and 30 or 36, one for the milk or other liquid and the other for a cooling or heating liquid; the first passage 24 extends from a supply connection 28 to an outlet 27 for discharge into the container. The lid comprises two separable units each consisting of a dished, flanged plate 11 or 17 and a pair of metal sheets 19, 31 or 20, 37. The two units are held against a sealing ring 18 by the vacuum. The two sheets have mating helical corrugations 21, 23 to form the first passage 24, which is helical. Two passages for the cooling or heating fluid are provided, one between the sheet 31 and plate 17 and the other between the sheet 37 and plate 11. Ribs 32, 32a are provided on the sheets 31, 37 to form labyrinth passages. A filter 40 is supported below the milk outlet 27 by a spider on a nut 42 which is shaped to deflect the falling milk or other liquid away from the end of the vacuum pipe 22. In modifications, the pairs of sheets 19, 31 and 20, 37 are formed as units, and the heating or cooling fluid may flow in helical paths between the sheets in these pairs. Some dimensions are given.
