Mushrooms &c. have their roots and then their stalks cut off by an operator pushing sideways the root end of a mushroom, which is held in each hand; into side gaps 3 and operating a treadle which moves side knives 8 downwards whereby each root is cut off between the lower cutting edge of a knife 8 and a co-operating lower fixed knife 4. The mushrooms are next pushed stalk first inwards and another treadle is operated to raise the knives 8 the upper edges of which co-operate with upper fixed knives 4 to cut off the stalk near the head. The first treadle pulls a pivoted deflector plate 9 down as in Fig. 1 whereby a link 10 pivots the framework of side plates 5 downwards. Each doubleedged knife 8 is fixed across a gap 3 in these plates. When the roots are cut off, they fall on the deflector plate 9 which directs the roots into one receptacle. The other tradle pivots the plate 9 upwards to deflect the cut-off stalks into another receptacle or on to a conveyer, such movement also pivoting up the plates 5 with their knives 8 to cut off the stalks. The gaps 3 are partly masked by a guard plate (20, Fig. 2, not shown) which pivots across the gap 3 by the pushing inwards of the mushrooms.
