Abstract

735,344. Preventing crankcase explosions. DOXFORD & SONS, Ltd., W., PURDIE, W. H., and JACKSON, P. June 12, 1953 [March 13, 1952], No. 6582/52. Class 7(2). [Also in Group XXIX] A pressure relief aperture 12 for a crankcase is closed by a sealing member 13 (e.g. a plastic membrane) which is readily ruptured by pressure within the casing resulting from a minor internal explosion and also closed by a secondary closure member 17 of substantial construction which is readily displaceable by such internal pressure but is urged to return to the closed position by gravity, spring, or other means to rapidly reclose the relief aperture and prevent any inrush of air which would cause a major explosion. The sealing member 13 may be of plastic, paper, card or other thin sheet material and held on the flanged mouth 14 of the aperture 12 by a spring 16. The cover 17 is hinged at 20 and is urged by its weight to its closed position resting on a flange 19. A spring 21 limits the opening of the cover 17 by engaging extensions of ribs 22 thereon and also helps to return the cover to its closed position. The Provisional Specification states that the device is also applicable to other spaces containing air and oil vapour. Specification 675,848 is referred to.
