Abstract
675,848. Crank - chambers. COOPERBESSEMER CORPORATION. Jan. 19,1951 [Jan. 20, 1950], No. 1486/51. Class 7(ii) A crankcase explosion relief structure for diesel, gas or other engines comprises a crankcase cover 1 having openings 2 con- .trolled by plate valves 3 held closed by leaf springs 7 re-acting against the bars 8 of a guard grid 4 covered by a readily frangible fibrous sheet gasket or other diaphragm 12 isolating the valves 3 from a housing 10 forming a relief chamber 11 with one or more exit openings 14 preferably at the side in one or more walls as shown. On the occurrence of a crankcase explosion, the valves 3 open and the diaphragm 12 ruptures to allow blow-out, the valves then closing to prevent a further explosion due to ingress of air. For ready replacement of the diaphragm 12, the housing 10 and grid 4 are independently secured by bolts 13, 5.
