735,294. Mine roof supports. BOLTON & CO. (ENGINEERS), Ltd., A., and BOLTON, R. B. May 6, 1953 [March 4, 1952], No. 5679/52. Class 20 (2). A fluid-pressure mine roof supporting unit comprises a forward roof supporting ram 11 and a rearward roof-supporting ram 12 linked together by a double-acting ram 26, the opposite sides of the piston of which communicate respectively with the cylinders of the rams 11, 12. The ram 11 is mounted on the ram 26 the piston rod 18 of which is connected by a balljointed link 20 to the ram 12. The forward ram 11 communicates through a passage 87 with the after side of the piston 70 of the ram 26 and the rearward ram 12 communicates through passages 75, 74, 73 in the link 20 and rod 18 with the forward side of the piston 70. Thus when fluid is supplied to the forward ram 11 it is forced more powerfully against the roof and fluid acting behind the piston 70 of the ram 26 moves the rear ram 12 forward. Similarly the ram 12 is forced against the roof and the ram 11 moved forward. Sufficient pressure may be maintained in the ram 11 or 12 which is being moved to support the roof. Each ram 11, 12 comprises telescoping pistons 27, 31 which must rise together and when a shoulder 33 stops the outer piston the inner piston rises to apply the final pressure. Roof-engaging straps 46, 47 are mounted on spherical joists on these pistons and are connected by a sliding bar 60 hinged at 61 to the strap 47. A skid bar 92 protecting the mechanism is mounted on the front of the cylinder 26 by a pin 93 and the skid bars of neighbouring units are connected by an intermediate skid bar connected by sliding hinges, Fig. 5 (not shown). The pressure supply pipes of a battery of units may be inter. connected.
