733,963. Automatic current control systems; control systems for consumption apparatus; inductors. BLELOCH, W. Aug. 10, 1953, No. 22006/53. Classes 38 (2) and 38 (4). In Fig. 1 an electric arc furnace 2 is supplied with alternating current through a transformer 4 in series with a saturable reactor 3. The output of a current transformer 11 is rectified and controls a bucking field 7 of a D.C. generator 6 energizing the control winding of reactor 3 so as to maintain constant furnace current. A suitable saturable reactor comprises a threelegged core 12, Fig. 2, of ferro-magnetic material carrying a D.C. winding 16 and A.C. windings 17 connected so that no alternating potential is induced in winding 16. The necessary small inductance is obtained by forming windings 17 of a number of conducting strips or a slotted pipe 19 to be equivalent to a fraction of a turn. The angle of the slots which determines the inductance may be adjustable if the strips are flexible. The A.C. windings may be connected in series by a strap 18 as shown or in parallel. The Specification also refers to three phase arrangements, manual control of saturating current, power factor' correction, and A.C. windings of low inductance formed by a largely non- inductive winding or by a straight conductor embraced by a shaped core.
