Abstract

1,046,446. Transformer systems. BRENTFORD ELECTRIC Ltd., and C. B. HENMAN. May 15, 1963 [May 16, 1962], No. 18940/62. Headings H2H. A transformer system for regulating the voltage at a pair of output terminals 16, 17 comprises a fixed ratio transformer 11 having its primary winding 12 connected to an alternating current source 15 and one of its secondary windings 14 supplying the output voltage of the system by way of the secondary winding 28 of a further transformer whereby the output voltage of the secondary winding 14 can be bucked or boosted to a variable extent by means of apparatus including a regulator 21 and switches 23, 26. A further secondary winding 13 of the transformer 11 is connected across the auto-transformer winding 18 of the regulator 21, the winding 18 being provided with two roller contacts 19, 20 arranged to move end to end of the winding in opposite directions so as to always be symmetrically disposed about the centre point of the winding. The voltages tapped off by the contacts 19, 20 are applied, by way of the switches 23, 26, to primary windings 24, 25 associated with the secondary winding 28 so as to provide the bucking or boosting voltages. The two primary windings 24, 25 are arranged to aid each other and each have the same number of turns. The switches 23, 26 are of the " make-before-break " type and the contacts 19, 20 are returned to their associated end positions in which no voltage is applied to either winding 24 or 25 before the switches 23, 26 are changed over from one position to another. If the mains supply is suitable it may be used to energize the regulator 21 directly and the winding 13 omitted. The system ensures that the product of the maximum voltage applied in the output circuit by the regulator during boost and the maximum current flowing in the output circuit during boost is substantially equal to the product of the maximum voltage applied in the output circuit by the regulator during buck and the maximum current flowing in the output circuit during buck and that both of these products are less than the product of the mean of the maximum boost and buck voltages applied in the output circuit by the regulator and the maximum current flowing in the output circuit.
