733,913. Continuous-casting machines. RUSCOE, E. B., and TURNER, J. J. Nov. 30, 1951 [Nov. 30, 1950], No. 29309/50. Class 83 (1). A continuous-casting machine having a mould with a bottom which is lowered during pouring by a power unit acting through a variable gear, e.g. as in Specification 617,499, to which reference is made, is provided with mechanism through which the power unit can raise said bottom quickly without the need to alter the setting of the variable gear used in lowering. The means for lowering the bottom may be similar to that described in the prior Specification and include an electric motor 12 and infinitely variable gear 13, but this drives through a loose gear 26 and clutch 30 and a splined clutch sleeve 33 movable axially so that when moved to the right the shaft 23 is driven from the motor through the clutch 31, the gear 26 being by-passed. If the output shaft 22 of the reduction gear 13 rotates in the same direction as the input shaft 20, the clutch-operating bar 38 operates motor-reversing switches at the same time. The electrical circuit may include switch devices to prevent incorrect operation. The teeth of the clutches 30, 31 drive in one direction only.
