Abstract
733,817. Preventing corrosion. HUGHES & CO., Ltd., F. A. Dec. 14, 1953 [Jan. 27, 1953], No. 2320/53. Class 123 (1). A sacrificial anode for the cathodic protection of ferrous structures immersed, for example, in sea water consists in one form of two bundles of magnesium alloy strips 10 each secured by a middle wrapping 11 or 12 of zinc or aluminium foil, the protruding ends of the strips being at least six inches long and of length from 6 to 36 times the width of the strip. The anode is supported from the structure by a rod 14 which is clamped between the bundles by bolts 15, 16. The anode may be used to provide a high initial polarizing current, the strips then being bent outwardly to form a structure as shown in Fig. 2, the angle between the strips, which determines the current output, being adjusted as required. If the strips are not bent apart, the anode can be used for the long term protection of the structure. In another form, the anode consists of a bundle of magnesium alloy wires welded together at one end. Specification 733,844 is referred to.
