A device for the cathodic protection of ferrous structures immersed for example in sea water, comprises a magnesium alloy anode and a protector sheet of zinc disposed so as to shield part of the anode surface and thus to prevent excessive corrosion thereof. In one form, Fig. 1, the anode consists of a number of magnesium alloy plates 10 spaced apart on a zinc galvanized brass or steel core rod 11 by ebonite or porcelain spacers 12, a U-shaped zinc strip 13 passing over or around each spacer to connect the plates electrically and to shield them from corrosion in the area adjacent the core rod. In another form, Fig. 3, a cylindrical anode 30 has a zinc sleeve 33 or the device consists, Fig. 4, of an anode block 40 attached to the structure 41 by a galvanized steel bar 42 also carrying a zinc plate 43 disposed between the anode and the structure.
