733,691. Trailer vehictes; arrangement of wheels and axles. TOMPKINS, G. M. June 9, 1952 [June 22, 1951], No. 14481/52. Classes 108 (1) and 108 (2). A trailer road vehicle has wheels which may be retracted upwardly and outwardly, Figs. 1, 2, to reduce head room when the trailer is carried in a railway truck. Each spring 4, Fig. 3, is shackled to a link 10 pivotable about a pin 11 across the body and to a nut 7 which may be moved along on a rotatable screw 14 to retract the wheel. The wheels may be mounted to swivel on rings 18, and may be partly retracted with or without the aid of jacks to assist in loading and unloading. When carried on a railway truck the wheels may be jammed against the ends of the truck to position the trailer body. In a modification, the links 10 are positively rotated by gear wheels to move shoes 7 in their respective sliders 8.
