Abstract

The surface of steel, nickel or other metal which does not soften unduly at 400 DEG C. and preferably previously roughened, is coated with a layer of polytetrafluoroethylene by bringing a cleaned metal surface into contact with a coating of polytetrafluoroethylene which may be in powder or granular form and subjecting the two to pressure at a temperature of 320-400 DEG C., e.g. by heating electrically or by the use of a hot bed on which the metal rests or by applying heat to the interface electrically or otherwise, e.g. by supersonic radiation. The time required to effect the coating varies with the pressure, e.g. two hours at 5 lb. per square inch or two minutes at 2 tons per square inch and where it exceeds more than a few minutes the heating is carried out in an inert atmosphere. Continuous coating may be effected by feeding a metal strip through a heater to a sprinkler device which supplies a layer of p.t.f.e. and then to a hot bed where pressure is applied by a cold roller and finally to a cooling chamber. Specifications 657,080 and 657,085, [both in Group XXXIV], are referred to.
