Relates to a bayonet with a blade 12, Figs. 1, 4 having an integral shank 14 of width somewhat less than that of the blade, the bayonet having a T-slot in the-handle to receive a T-piece on a rifle and a pin 30 on a guard 18 which enters a hole in the gas chamber of the rifle. According to the invention two guide pieces 50, Figs. 3, 4 are mounted on opposite sides of the shank 14 and have portions with facing grooves 60 located above the shank so that these portions in conjunction with the shank 14 form the T- slot. A spring-urged lever 32 pivoted at 40 on the shank 14 has at one end a pad 36 for receiving pressure from the fingers and at the other end latching fingers 44 which pass through vertical grooves 62 in the guide pieces 50 to extend into the T-slot and serve to lock the bayonet on the rifle. The rear edges of the fingers 44 are rounded so that the T-piece on insertion will cam the fingers 44 down and after passing them, the fingers 44 snap back into place behind the T-piece. The shank 14 passes through an aperture in the guard 18 which is held against shoulders 20 by plates 22, Fig. 4, secured on opposite sides of the shank 14 by a rivet 24. The plates are first outwardly bent and then pressed inwardly against the shank 14 to exert pressure on the guard 18.
