Abstract

732,700. Temperature-responsive actuating- elements. DISTILLERS CO., Ltd. Jan. 26, 1954 [Jan. 30, 1953], No. 2662/53. Class 64 (2). [Also in Group XL (b)] A radiation detector comprises a chamber, one wall of which is transparent to the radiations, e.g. infra-red radiation, a facing concave reflecting wall, a flexible diaphragm in the reflecting wall which is moved by pressure changes in the chamber, and means for measuring the movement of the flexible diaphragm. As shown, the chamber has a window 2 of quartz, rock salt, glass, fluorite, silver chloride or other material chosen according to the radiation to be transmitted. Opposite the window is a concave surface 3 which may be inserted or may be the wall of the chamber ground and polished. The concavity of this surface is such as to direct the radiation on to a mirror 4 in the middle of the window and again to concave reflector 3. Absorption of radiation in the chamber causes expansion of the gas in it and deformation of a flexible diaphragm 6 which may be of aluminium, gold or platinum, or plastic which may bear a metal film. Movement of the diaphragm is detected by associating it with a fixed electrode 8 so that the capacity between the two electrodes varies. To prevent zero errors due to pressure differences between the chamber and its surroundings, a capillary leak is provided. The movement of the diaphragm may also be detected as the deflection of a light spot reflected by the diaphragm observed either optically or electrically.
