Abstract

732,540. Retractive switches. LEEDAM, C. Dec. 11, 1952 [Dec. 15, 1951; March 15, 1952], Nos. 29410/51 and 6764/52. Class 38 (5). [Also in Group XXXVIII] A switch for energizing a " stop " light 10 on a vehicle provided with a pedal-operated braking system comprises a rubber cap 4 adapted to fit over the pedal 3 and containing electrical contacts arranged to be closed by light foot pressure on the face of the cap 4 preliminary to braking. The cap 4 has an inwardly turned boundary flange 5 which retains the cap on the pedal 3 yet permits the cap to move relative to the pedal. A contact plate 6 is insulated from the pedal 3 by a separator sheet 12 and carries a spring 14 serving to urge a movable plate 7, and hence the cap 4, away from the pedal 3 such that the flange 5 engages the back of the pedal as shown. Wiring 9 passes through the cap 4, one wire being connected to the plate 6 by means of spring 14 and another wire being connected to several contact points 13 on the movable plate 7 (see also Fig. 4, not shown). Three modifications are described. In the embodiment of Fig. 5 (not shown), a central rubber plug takes the place of spring 14 and connection to the plate 6 is made via the pedal 3 by omitting the insulating backing sheet 12 and turning the edges of the plate 6 over the edge of the pedal. The embodiment of Fig. 6 (not shown), further omits plate 6 and utilizes the pedal 3 itself as the back contact. The third modification (Fig. 7, not shown), also uses the pedal as the back contact but has a spring to urge plate 7 away therefrom, the plate 7 having a central aperture through which the spring is located in a recess in the cap 4.
