732,325. Turbine, compressor and pump blades. MASCHINENFABRIK AUGSBURGNURNBERG AKT.-GES. Aug. 21, 1953 [Sept. 4, 1952], No. 23169/53. Class 110 (3). A rotor blade for an axial-flow gas turbine, compressor or pump has a protective layer of material of very low wear resistance at those places which are likely to catch against or graze stationary parts of the machine. In the ceramic blade shown, a protective coating 5, preferably consisting of a glaze or other ceramic composition, which will be foamy and highly porous after the blade has been fired, is applied to the blade tip. The layer may be applied over an initial layer of compact glaze. The layer has a low resistance to abrasion and the final machining of the rotor periphery can be done by pushing a slightly conical cylinder over the rotor while the latter is rapidly rotated, thereby grinding the blade tips to the required dimension. In the case of a metal blade, the protective layer may be of sintered metal.
